Our jobs can feel as though there is a never-ending loop of mundane tasks and checklists. Whether you are sitting at a computer, servicing trucks and heavy equipment, out on route servicing customers or solving complex hazardous waste problems, workplace fatigue is a real issue. Fatigue can be caused by many workplace factors, such as:
- Stress
- Physically or mentally demanding tasks
- Working in hot environments
- Lack of sleep or poor sleep habits
Fatigue is known to:
- Decrease reaction times
- Reduce attention or concentration
- Limit short-term memory
- Impair judgment
Skipping breaks might seem like Customer Zeal, but it can be a safety hazard! When the feeling of fatigue creeps in, take a few moments to stop and stretch, take a short walk, grab a healthy snack and re-focus. Even a short break and a quick stretch can reboot your energy. And don’t forget to fuel your day with protein, healthy carbs and water! Think yogurt, fruit, hummus and popcorn – not fast food. For energy and focus, whole grain carbs are your friends.
If you’re feeling tired at work, you may need to improve your sleep at home. Here are some tips:
- Invest in blackout curtains
- Ditch the screens before bed
- Embrace a relaxing bedtime routine
When you are feeling exhausted or burnt out – know that you aren’t alone. Chat with your supervisor, a coworker, manager or use the employee assistance program to speak with a professional.
