The winter months are no time to slack when it comes being safe on the roads. So, we asked Fenster (yes, he only goes by one name like Madonna), Senior Safety Manager, how to stay safe this winter while on the road.Q. When it comes to winter safety on the roads, what’s the most important thing for people to know?
A. When it comes to staying safe in the winter, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Planning ahead can make all the difference. We ask our drivers to dress in layers, check the weather before coming in to work and adjust their driving habits based on the conditions.
Q. How do we keep our drivers safe on the winter roads?
A. Safety is our number one priority and that’s why we provide additional awareness training for our drivers during the winter months. Sometimes it’s just a reminder on things like slowing down, increasing the amount of space you leave between you and another vehicle, and anticipating the actions of other drivers. We also order more supplies like jackets, gloves and hats before winter hits to ensure they have enough attire to keep them warm.
Q. Any additional advice for those of us that don’t drive a massive truck?
A. Pay attention to your surroundings. People are so distracted when they’re driving. Icy roads and snowy conditions don’t allow for a ton of reaction time when it comes to driving. Keep your eyes moving, because anticipation helps avoidance when it comes to accidents. Bottom line, if you feel unsafe driving down a road, don’t do it.
