A few weeks ago, Harlingen, TX was hit by a crushing tornado, wreaking havoc on our landfill and hauling facility, and causing a great deal of damage along the way. The twister struck at 3:00 a.m., blowing off doors, flipping roll-offs, collapsing ceilings and flooding buildings while dumping over six inches of rain.
Raul M., Landfill Supervisor, arrived at the scene at 5:30 a.m. He worked with Jimmy R., Operations Manager, who was on vacation at that time. Once all employees were safe and accounted for, they got to work. They ensured the site was safe and operational and still opened on time using manual tickets while local crews worked to further secure the site.
They lived up to our customers’ expectations and then some, getting some great business from a competing landfill that was delayed due to the heavy rainfall.
“I’m extremely proud of the team’s resilience. This is a perfect example of Customer Zeal, and how Raul, Jimmy, and everyone at the facility focus on our values by being Safe, Committed to Serve, and Human-Centered. We’re lucky no one was hurt, and we were able to do some cleanup and get back to work,” said Jon D., General Manager.
“We’ve had our fair share of bad weather in the area. From hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding etc… Whatever Mother Nature throws at us, we’ve been able to start work on time and serve our customers. The key is having a great ‘wet weather area’ for bad weather landfill access. The team’s preparedness is the reason we were able to remain operational while our competitor delayed for days,” Jon added.
