When it Comes to Severe Weather Safety, Planning is Key[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='16' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] Hurricane Dorian is the latest tropical storm to affect millions. While the storm brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the Bahamas, and came dangerously close to the east coast, we are thankful that all of our affected employees remained safe.
As with any disaster, our first priority is always our people, and then our assets and customers. This prioritization makes sure our people are safe and taken care of, which in turn, positions us to best support our customers and communities after the disaster hits. Our Business Continuity Teams remain ready to respond if needed.
“Business Continuity can help plan for, mitigate and respond to severe weather events which may impact our operations. We do this by offering personal preparation materials on various event types and by developing and training local and area response teams. The goal of these teams is to support our employees and customers by following our response process to quickly and safely return to normal operations,” said Paul S., Business Continuity Manager.
To stay ahead of the storms, Business Continuity has an advanced mapping tool that can plot event types and proximity to our locations and employees’ homes. “Using this tool, we can select the areas where major events will likely occur or have occurred. From there, we can use various contact methods, including our mass notification tool to check on employee wellness or to send updates. In events where we have advance notice, like a hurricane, we provide employees with instructive letters and preparation advice. This includes safety information, as well as how to connect with managers and supervisors who can then share key information about operational status and other instructions,” Paul said.
Plan, Plan, Plan Before Disaster Strikes
Paul’s safety advice to all employees is to proactively think about the risks in the areas where they live and then plan specifically for those. “Make sure all members of your family are familiar with how to respond to various events, how to get to safety and how to contact each other once you’re safe. Lastly, don’t forget about pets and checking in on neighbors, too!” Paul adds.

When an unexpected disaster strikes, many of us want to help impacted colleagues and their families
Through the Republic Services Employee Relief Fund, help starts with us. The Employee Relief Fund is a charitable organization with the mission to support our employees in times of crisis. The funds are granted to employees in need after a disaster occurs so that they can continue to work and rebuild their lives. Once employees apply and are approved for assistance, they can receive funds to help with finding permanent housing, making emergency repairs to their homes, or paying for food, clothing and transportation expenses.
