Vision Zero Aims to Make Industry Safer

Republic Services has been an active member of the Together for Safer Roads (TSR) coalition since 2016. We’re also an active member of the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) with many of our leaders serving on boards and subcommittees in their areas of expertise. For example, Republic’s Vice President of Safety Jim O. has been on the NWRA safety committee for 20 years, serving as co-chair of the committee for seven years.

Bringing road safety and the importance of cross-industry collaboration together, these two critical organizations have announced a new partnership. TSR and NWRA are jointly launching a pilot safety training project called Vision Zero starting in New York. Republic will work with TSR and NWRA when Vision Zero is rolled out in Houston and in other future markets.

The goal of Vision Zero is to continue to find innovative solutions to make the recycling and waste industry safer for all drivers on our roadways. TSR will work with NWRA and municipalities – and even Republic’s own safety team - on safety resources, technologies and infrastructure, all with a goal of making the industry safer.

“Safety is our top priority at Republic Services, and as the operator of one of the nation’s largest fleets, we do everything we can to be safe on America’s roadways,” said Jim O. “We are proud to be the first recycling and waste services provider to partner with Together for Safer Roads, and we welcome NWRA to the coalition.”

Together for Safer Roads (TSR) is a global corporate social accelerator bringing together public and private organizations to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities. Republic is the only recycling and waste services provider to be a member of TSR. The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) is a trade association representing private sector U.S. recycling and waste companies. Click here for more information about TSR and NWRA.
