Tampa Bay Volunteers Transform Outdoor School Spaces

On May 18, Republic Services and 40 volunteers transformed outdoor spaces at Young Middle Magnet School and Sligh Middle School. The work supported outdoor learning, food access, and greener neighborhoods.

The day of service was funded by a $125,000 National Neighborhood Promise® grant from the Republic Services Charitable Foundation.

The grant will help Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful and Keep Polk County Beautiful plant and share 900 shade and fruit trees. The trees will go to underserved areas, replace trees lost to hurricanes, and help cool local neighborhoods.

At the schools, volunteers:

  • Built outdoor benches and tables
  • Planted fruit trees
  • Installed a vertical garden and sunshade
  • Cleaned a greenhouse
  • Assembled compost bins
  • Built 200 bucket gardens for local families
