Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions

For many of us, ringing in the New Year also means setting New Year’s resolutions. Here are a few tips to help you set and keep to your 2021 resolutions.

  1. Start with a real desire for a change
  2. Set SMART goals (see below for more information)
  3. Set short and long-term goals
  4. Create a strong network or support system
  5. Anticipate and plan for obstacles
  6. Focus on your willpower – try sticking to just 1-2 goals, remove temptations, make a plan, track your progress and reward yourself!

What is SMART?

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

Here's an example:

Original resolution or goal:
I will exercise more.
A SMART resolution or goal:
Specific: I’ll walk every week.
Measurable: I’ll walk for 30 minutes
Achievable: Ask yourself, “Do I have 30 minutes to devote to walking every week? Is this achievable?”
Realistic: I’ll walk three days per week after work and before dinner.
Time-bound: I’ll start next Monday. I’ll check in with myself each month to see how many weeks I completed my goal.
New and improved resolution:
I will walk for 30 minutes three days next week after work.
