Keeping our communities strong is vital ̶ especially in times of need, and that’s why we’re extending our Committed to Serve charitable giving initiative into 2021. The Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is one of 12 local Habitat for Humanity International affiliates that recently received a Committed to Serve grant from our charitable foundation that will help strengthen communities one business at a time.
With the help of this funding and local in-kind donations, the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is providing critical repairs and resources to the small businesses that serve as anchors in the local community – like the P&S Corner Store. More than a convenience store, P&S Corner Store is a bright spot in East Oak Cliff, which is considered a food desert. Providing fresh groceries and prepared meal options, P&S Corner Store is an access point to food and resources. As a part of the project, roof repairs, chiller and lighting repairs will be organized for the store.
“We feel so blessed by this act of kindness,” said Sharon Aycock, owner of the P&S Corner Store, one of four businesses receiving assistance through the initiative. The other three businesses include the following:
- DNH Mortgage Bank: DNH Mortgage Bank helps Dallas Habitat families who earn below 80% of the Area Median Income access a 0% mortgage and secure their path to homeownership.
- Marsalis Urgent Care: New to the area, Marsalis Urgent Care will be closing a healthcare gap for the Oak Cliff community. Renovation projects such as building updates and restroom renovations will help the business open and provide critical access to care, which has never been more important.
- For Oak Cliff: A community hub, For Oak Cliff provides a place for children to learn and play after school. With the help of Dallas Habitat, For Oak Cliff will be able to repair their community garden, install a much-needed fence and add a container to house their garden supplies.
