Scale Operators play an important role at Republic Services. They are primarily responsible for accurately and efficiently monitoring and recording material volumes entering the site, as well as collecting appropriate usage fees from customers.
Meet the team behind the scales at BU 252 in South Georgia. Each of them working hard to ensure a safe environment for our drivers and customers. What is your favorite thing about being a scale operator? I like the daily interactions with different people and knowing that some days I put a smile on their face.
What does Safe mean to you? Safety to me is being aware of my surroundings and the surroundings of others to maintain their safety as well.

What is your favorite thing about being a scale operator? I enjoy building strong bonds and meaningful connections with our customers, as well as the camaraderie, teamwork and daily interactions I share with my coworkers.
What does Safe mean to you? To me, safety means being proactive and consistent in following procedures to protect both myself and others. It’s about creating a secure environment where everyone feels confident that their wellbeing is a priority.
What is your favorite movie? The Great Debater. I love how it showcases the power of words and courage in the face of racism, and the importance of education and discipline.

What is your favorite thing about being a scale operator? Being able to make people smile once they interact with me.
What is the most challenging thing? Our Transfer Station is housed in the same building as the hauling division. So, it’s challenging to take care of both the trucks that are on the scale and the customers paying for their regular trash service.
What does Safe mean to you? Safety to me means awareness, for example, if someone seems too hot, I make sure to offer cold water or offer to take them inside to cool off.

What is your favorite thing about being a scale operator? Meeting new people and getting to know them. Also, working with a big family that has your back in time of need.
What is the most challenging thing? Lots of things are challenging. There’s never a perfect day at the scale house but you keep going!
