At Republic Services, Safe is our top value, and we are dedicated to protecting our employees, customers and communities. While many of our employees drive as part of their jobs, it’s everyone’s responsibility to make good choices behind the wheel.
To reinforce this commitment, we recently introduced a new Distracted Driving Policy, effective January 1, 2025*. This policy replaces any existing local or Area distracted driving policies and applies to all Republic Services employees* while operating a company vehicle or making work-related calls or sending work-related messages in a personal vehicle.

Please take a moment to review the policy. Key highlights include:
- Hands-Free Calling: If you have to make or receive a call while driving you must use the speaker phone option and a single button or voice commands to initiate, answer or end a call on a mobile device.
- Texting and Typing Prohibited: Texting or typing on a mobile device is strictly prohibited while driving.
- Park for Complex Interactions: All employees must safely park their vehicle before making or receiving a call that requires significant interaction.
- No Over-the-Ear or In-Ear Devices: These are not permitted for any purpose while operating a vehicle.
Thank you for helping us continue to prioritize safety in all that we do. This policy is an important step in promoting safe driving practices that align with our Environmental, Health and Safety standards. By reducing distractions, we can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone goes home at the end of the day.
If you have any questions or need additional guidance, please reach out to your HR or Safety representative.
*Union-represented employees: This policy shall be effective on February 1 with respect to union-represented employees, although it does not apply to the extent inconsistent with an applicable collective bargaining agreement or applicable labor laws, which may or may not impose additional restrictions or limitations.
