The Importance of Pride Month to Our Employees: Part I

Throughout the rest of this month we will feature some employees as they share their perspectives. We recently sat down with Becky K. and Marquita J. Read on to see what they had to share! Becky K., Director of the Chandler CRC

When Becky isn’t leading our Chandler, AZ Customer Resource Center, you may find her on the golf course or at a sporting event. But her top priority is spending quality time with her family, including her wife and their two sons. “They are my world!” she says.

For me, Pride Month is about being yourself and standing up for who you are and how you make an impact. I’m a mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, leader, employee, mentor and supporter just like so many other women in our world.

Republic Services can continue creating an inclusive culture for our LGBTQ+ community by continuing to welcome gay employees. Let us know that we are just as welcome as anyone else, and to me, the best way to do that is to treat us as you would any other employee. You may not accept our lifestyle but seek to understand us. I have always felt included at Republic Services. I’m blessed to be surrounded by people who include me. I work for an amazing company with phenomenal leaders who support me; however, not everyone has that experience. Lift up your peers! Be the support they need. I’ve had support throughout my career, and I look forward to being that support for others.

Marquita J., UX/UI Designer, IT

Marquita works at our Northsight corporate office, but in her down time, she is an entrepreneur within the LGBTQ+ community. She’s also a member of the queer-based Gamma Rho Lambda National Sorority.

To me, Pride Month means remembering. It means looking at all we have gone through to make a reason for a month of pride. It means looking at what we can still do to make it important to celebrate ourselves and be proud of who we are through opposition. 

We can continue to be open to the LGBTQ+ community and create a space for those who would like to talk about their identity as it relates to the workplace. Our industry is one that draws all types of people, and as a Company we should create the kind of culture where we, as gay employees, will thrive. Pride Month is important to the LGBTQ+ community. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBTQ+ rights movements. I encourage each of us to do all that we can to support equality and inclusion as we celebrate Pride Month.
