Celebrating Pride Month & Our Diversity

June 11, 2020

The Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, NY in June of 1969 is considered the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States – and each June to follow, the LGBTQ+ (which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning community and its allies) have come together to celebrate Pride Month in recognition of the influence the LGBTQ+ community has on society and business around the world.

The recent tragedy in Minneapolis and protests across the country highlight the importance of inclusion in our society – and our Company. The past few weeks have been a pivotal moment for our country and our Company. Inclusion is not just about race and gender – it is about providing a safe space for all diversity. We are proud to work for a Company that hires, serves and supports people of all backgrounds, families of all types, and people from all walks of life.  We believe that with deeper empathy for one another, and by connecting with each other in new and meaningful ways we will be better together, and as a Company.

This year, Pride Month celebrations might look a little different. Reflecting on what this month stands for, we hope you spend the time on being inclusive and respectful of your colleagues, who may be different from you in their sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender or any other qualities or beliefs that make us who we are. we might not be able to participate in in-person volunteer activities, parades or festivals this year, but throughout the month Republic Services will showcase our support for our LGBTQ+ employees and allies in a variety of ways.

What you can expect this month:

  • Watch for a weekly spotlight on a few of our LGBTQ+ employees talking about why Pride Month is important to them.
  • And we want to hear from you!
  • If you’re comfortable doing so, submit your own personal story to BlueNation@RepublicServices.com and it may be showcased in one of our upcoming communications.
  • Show us how you are supporting Pride Month. Submit pictures of you, your families, co-workers and teams to BlueNation@RepublicServices.com. At the end of the month, we will post a collage of the LGBTQ+ community and allies pictures submitted.

This month serves as a reminder of our ongoing commitment to creating a culture where people of all backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and faith feel safe, respected, and valued. Together, we are working to make our Company a model for inclusiveness and equality.
