Petaluma, CA Team Celebrates New Organics Transfer Station

Our Petaluma, CA team recently celebrated the opening of a new organics transfer station at the Sonoma County Central Landfill. The facility will serve more than 185,000 homes and 50,000 businesses, processing 25–30 tons of organic material per hour. New depackaging technology removes contamination from food waste. Processed material is sent to an anaerobic digester, a facility that breaks down organic waste, where biogases are captured and turned into renewable energy. This process helps divert waste from the landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions while also creating electricity.

This is another example of how Republic Services is exemplifying sustainability in action and driving meaningful environmental impact in the communities we serve.
