More than 30 million Americans have diabetes – and an estimated 7.3 million of them don’t know it. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and there are steps you can take to manage the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Keep these in mind to help reduce the risk:
- Diet Makes a Difference – A balanced diet can go a long way to maintaining proper blood sugar levels. Adding non-starchy vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins are great ways to help keep your blood glucose at healthy levels.
- Get Moving –Staying active can help reduce your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve your body’s ability to use insulin.
- Know Your Risk – Some of the risk factors of type 2 diabetes include: being overweight, being 45 or older, having a close family member with diabetes, and having high blood pressure.
