New RNG Plant in California is Largest of Its Kind in State

Earlier this month, Republic Services leaders, dozens of community members, elected officials and our partners at Ameresco celebrated the opening of the Keller Canyon RNG Plant in Pittsburg, CA. This landfill gas to renewable natural gas (RNG) plant is adjacent to our Keller Canyon Landfill and is the largest of its kind in the state. The plant processes 4,500 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas – that’s the equivalent to taking 30,000 cars off the road each year.

When waste decomposes in a landfill, it produces a biogas that is captured through sophisticated gas collection systems. We partner with energy companies like Ameresco and Archaea to turn it into RNG, electricity or thermal energy. The Keller Canyon project is one of nearly 70 landfill gas-to-energy projects across the country, with many more in the pipeline.
