Dear Ethical Ethel
I suspect – but I’m not sure – that someone is violating our Code of Ethics. Should I keep my concerns to myself?
Sincerely,
Timid but Concerned

Dear Timid but Concerned:
No. If you suspect something then say something. You have the responsibility to share your concerns by reporting right away – even if you aren’t sure that a Code of Ethics violation has occurred.
We know it takes courage to come forward and share your concerns. Regardless of who you contact, you can be confident that you’re doing the right thing and never have to fear retaliation when voicing your concerns.
Thank you for doing your part!

Greetings Republic Team!
Thank you to all that have reached out with your questions and ideas – please keep those emails coming at AskEthicalEthel@RepublicServices.com. I wanted to share the above email exchange since I suspect there are others who wonder the same thing. Maybe you sense something just isn’t right or you saw something or heard about an act that may violate our Code of Ethics, policies or the law. Do you say something or ignore it?
When you report concerns, you help the Company handle issues properly, fix problems before they happen and remedy situations that may have already occurred. No concern is too minor to report.
Know that there are people ready to support you when you have a question, problem or concern. In most cases, your immediate supervisor is your first point of contact and most likely in the best position to understand your concern and take appropriate action. You also have the option to reach out to any other member of management, Human Resources, Legal and Ethics & Compliance.
The confidential AWARE Line also is available anytime for you to ask questions or raise concerns when you are reluctant to speak directly with a Company representative or prefer to remain anonymous. You can call at 1-866-3-AWARE-4 or go online at AWARELine.RepublicServices.com.
No matter how you choose to communicate, you can do so without fear of retaliation. Our commitment to open communication is critical to creating the kind of workplace where employees are encouraged to speak up, be confident that they will be heard and that their opinions do matter. In fact, we value your opinion by asking you to complete the Companywide employee engagement survey – so be heard!
I’m also spreading the message - hopefully you’ve seen me hanging around your location’s bulletin board on our Speak Up poster.
Remember, if you see or suspect anything unethical or illegal, it may seem easier to look the other way or let someone else take the lead – but misconduct affects all of us. No matter the job you do or where you do it, know your responsibilities to share concerns promptly and feel comfortable doing so.
