Lift Smart

[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='18' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] We probably don’t think about it, but we’re lifting a lot just in our daily routines. It may not be maneuvering a container like our frontline employees do each day, but it’s lifting, pushing and pulling our children, moving boxes, appliances, luggage, furniture – the list goes on. (Hopefully, you’re not pushing your kiddos, but you get the idea.)

With all these items to lift, pull and push, it’s a good idea to have some go-to tips that help ensure we’re doing it right. After all, it just takes one wrong move to get injured.

  • If given the option to push as opposed to pull, take it. (In general, it takes more force to pull an object than it does to push it.)
  • Use a side-to-side motion when pulling to reduce the amount of force you need.
  • Never lift more than 50 lbs by yourself.
  • For those lifts that require more than one person, coordinate efforts by assigning someone to give the cue to pick up, turn and set down.
  • Avoid walking backward if possible.
  • Avoid walking over objects.
  • When lifting, get as close to the object as possible, keep your back straight, bend at the knees and lift with your legs.
  • Most important, if it’s too heavy to lift, get help!
