Injury Prevention Starts with Smart Choices – at Work And Home

At Republic Services, as part of our Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) culture we focus on making safe choices to protect our health. Every day, whether on the job or off the clock, we face situations requiring us to choose to be safe. Injuries can happen instantly, but most are preventable when we stay alert and make smart, safe decisions.

Here are three of the most common causes of injuries, and how we can easily prevent them:

1. Slips, Trips and Falls
  • The Risk: Uneven surfaces, wet floors, cluttered walkways and poor lighting are all culprits. Slips and falls are a common cause of accidents in the bathroom.
  • Prevention Tip: Clear walkways, clean up spills immediately, use handrails and wear proper footwear. At home, watch for loose rugs or toys in high-traffic areas.
2. Improper Lifting or Overexertion
  • The Risk: Back strains, pulled muscles, and joint injuries often result from lifting heavy items incorrectly or pushing beyond our physical limits.
  • Prevention Tip: Use proper lifting techniques—lift with your legs, not your back. And never lift and twist. Ask for help when needed and take breaks during repetitive tasks. Don’t hesitate to use carts or lifting equipment.
3. Distractions and Inattention
  • The Risk: Multitasking, rushing, or being distracted (especially by handheld devices) can lead to job or home injuries.
  • Prevention Tip: Stay present and focused. Take your time, especially when using tools, cooking, driving or working around others. One distracted moment can lead to a preventable incident.

Every Day is a Choice

Injury prevention isn’t just about rules—it’s about habits. Whether you’re navigating a busy job site, cooking dinner or doing yardwork, commit to making safety part of your routine.
