But it doesn’t take long before we never hear about it again. It doesn’t impact us, and life goes on just like it did before.

That’s usually the case, right? Except in those few situations when our industry is directly impacted. That’s exactly what happened in Maryland when Governor Hogan signed the Slow Down to Get Around bill into law.

With this new law, all drivers are required to slow down and make safe lane changes when approaching a recycling or waste collection vehicle.

The goal of the new law is to promote awareness and safety for our industry’s employees and vehicles, including those who work on the state’s roads and highways.

And this sentiment hits close to home. Christopher L. of our Baltimore hauling division shared his own harrowing experience before the Maryland State Senate and House of Delegates. In 2007, Christopher was struck by a vehicle while he was servicing a residential recycling route.  At the close of his testimony, he said, “Enacting legislation that could help prevent future tragedies is the right thing to do for these workers and their families.”

Other agencies and municipalities, including the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), sent representatives to testify in favor of the bill.

The new law takes effect on October 1, 2018, making Maryland the 18th state to have such a law in place.

That’s all it took to get a Recycle Smart contest off the ground for elementary school students in Norman, Oklahoma.

Municipal Services Manager Crystal B. implemented a simple yet effective program teaching children how to help reduce contamination in the recycling waste stream. Students were taught about items that actually hurt the recycling process.

Armed with this knowledge, classes collected plastic bags, which are a big no-no when it comes to recycling. (Check this out – plastic bags are not only non-recyclable but they get caught up in our machinery and tangled into items that can be recycled, so all of the contaminated items have to go to the landfill.) The classroom that collected the most received a gift card, pizza party and a certificate delivered by Crystal and city officials.

Pics below show one of the winning classes. But really everyone, including Republic, won as this contest alone kept 564 plastic bags out of the recycling waste stream.

Way to go, Crystal!

This coveted award honors the most outstanding solid waste professional of the year.

Those who receive this honor represent many astute aspects of the solid waste industry, but they all share the same attributes of professionalism, leadership, ethics, integrity and personal dedication.

Prior to retiring from Republic in 2016, Bobby enjoyed a career in the solid waste industry that spanned several decades.  With experience in roles of sales manager, general manager, regional marketing representative and government affairs manager, he had great knowledge in landfills, hauling and recycling. He was also recognized by Republic for several individual and team accomplishments.

Bobby also gave back in big ways to his community – elected and served as a Councilman and Mayor of the City of Scott and assisted with membership and leadership of the Scott Lions Club, Mardi Gras associations and youth sports leagues.

Bobby was there with his wife and sons to receive this prestigious award.

Those at Republic who know Bobby understand the impact he had on our Company and agree this is a much deserved honor!
