Can you imagine what that number is across the world? 800 million. That’s right – over 800 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. It’s daunting and scary when you hear this number. It’s easy to turn your head, go back to work, pretend you didn’t just hear that stat. But it takes a strong team to look the issue in the eye, roll up their sleeves and do something about it.

That’s what our North Atlanta BU did when they spent an afternoon volunteering at a packing event for the From Hunger to Hope Project. There, they were separated into groups to create multiple packing stations. Using an assembly line, they scooped, packaged, weighed, labeled and sealed MannaPacks.

What’s a MannaPack? It’s a mix of rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables – a combination that provides maximum protein at the lowest cost, along with flavor and nutrition. These packs are easy to make using only boiling water and perhaps the best part – one pack provides 6 meals. So in just a few hours, Republic employees prepped 6,480 meals for those in need!

About the Hunger to Hope Project
From Hunger to Hope is passionate about making a difference in world hunger. They offer an opportunity to serve others around the world alongside those who wish to volunteer with the organization.

And let’s face it, we’re building something great at Republic. Who’s going to help us continue to carry the Company forward years from now if it’s not these younger generations?

We’ve partnered with the Jobs for Arizona Graduate Students (JAGS) program to help students think about the bigger picture –what comes after high school? It also provides us a great opportunity to educate them about what Republic is and what we stand for. After all, these students may be future Republic employees. And if they’re not, at least they gain awareness that there are great companies to work for out there.

As part of the program, 18 students from a local high school recently toured HQ for a firsthand experience of what it’s like to work for a large Company. Students gained insight into career opportunities and connected with Republic mentors from various departments.

More about our JAGS Partnership
Republic mentors make a yearlong commitment to mentor high school seniors. Through monthly meetings, Republic employees encourage college and career development. Oh, and one more pretty cool part to this partnership – Republic recognizes 2 JAGS students with scholarship awards. How’s that for a boost to get their continued education off the ground?

Every year, up to 40% of food in the U.S. is wasted. That’s $218 billion dollars lost in our economy. Think of it this way – if food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions. The City of Los Angeles alone sends over 1 million tons of food to the local landfills each year.

There’s a food crisis happening and many of the residents and businesses in L.A are becoming increasingly aware of it. In fact, organizations are coming together to ensure communities have access to healthy food grown and served with respect for the people and the earth – and no food is wasted.

Last year, the City of Los Angeles made bold moves to reform its waste collection services. Under the recycLA program, waste haulers partnered with food recovery not-for-profit agencies throughout the City to encourage food businesses, such as grocery stores and restaurants, to donate safe, editable surplus food to hunger relief agencies and homeless shelters.

With food waste a hot issue, the local community couldn’t let Food Waste Prevention Week go by without hosting an event to continue raising awareness. Earlier in the month, elected officials and key partner organizations, including Republic, held a press event at a local food bank in South Los Angeles.

The event shined a light on the food recovery programs that have emerged from the recycLA program so far, and where the program is going. There is still much work to be done and the public is invited to get involved and do their part to help reduce food waste.

Recycling Representative Tania R. had an opportunity to speak at the event. Click here to view the video.

It’s about leaving a long-lasting impact on the community. It’s about being a good neighbor and helping to build strong neighborhoods.

And that’s just what we did when we partnered with Habitat for Humanity last year to help build a 16-home community in Metro Denver’s Sheridan Square.

Months of hard work, hundreds of volunteer hours and $250,000 in financial support all led to a dedication ceremony in mid-February. Here, with the local community and politicians, Steve D., General Manager, Post Collection welcomed the new families to their homes.

Let’s hear it for the team!

“Republic Services is a strong community partner with Habitat for Humanity. Their generous investment in our Sheridan Square development is making a lasting and meaningful impact,” shared Heather L., CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver. “Their financial and volunteer contributions are helping us to build brighter futures with hardworking families.”

“Republic is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity and support the Sheridan Square development,” said Randy J., General Manager, Hauling. “We are committed to building strong communities by working alongside our fellow neighbors to help rebuild, revitalize and restore places and spaces in need.”

Harvard University is doing something to improve pedestrian and cyclists’ safety by installing side guards on university-owned large trucks. But that’s not all. They’re also asking the major vendors who service the university to install side guards on their vehicles, too.

Because we pick up Harvard’s waste, it was a no brainer we would abide by the request and have side guards installed on our trucks that drive that route. That’s what a Company whose # 1 priority is safety does.

This effort aligns with a commitment in Harvard’s sustainability plan to increase the bikeability and safety of the streets in and around Harvard’s campuses.

Side guards physically cover that exposed space, shielding pedestrians from being swept underneath the truck’s rear wheels.
