July is Distracted Driving Awareness Month at Republic Services, a campaign to encourage all employees to take a personal pledge to stop distracted driving. Why take the Safe Driver Pledge? Because every decision you make on the road is a chance to save a life, make it home to your loved ones every day, and make our roads safer for everyone.
The Safe Driver Pledge is a vow to uphold the highest standards of safety, never drive distracted and be an example of safe driving by keeping your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your mind on the task at hand.
It only takes a minute to take the Safe Driver Pledge. Bonus, everyone who takes the pledge in July will be entered into a weekly prize drawing for a custom travel mug. And one last thing … share the Safe Driver Pledge link with your loved ones (especially teen drivers) and invite them to take the pledge, too!

Do you know the three types of distracted driving?
Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Each day in the United States, approximately 9 people are killed and more than 1,000 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.
There are three main types of distraction:
- Manual distractions are those where you take your hands off the wheel. To prevent manual distractions, always keep both hands firmly on the wheel. Keep your phone out of reach and don’t reach for items while driving.
- Visual distractions are those where you focus your eyes away from the road. To avoid these, start by putting away any devices or objects that may draw your attention away from driving.
- Cognitive distractions are when you’re mind wanders away from the task of driving. When you’re behind the wheel, your only job is to drive. Stay focused on the road.
