New facility captures 60% of Mesa’s recyclables

Four years after its Salt River Recycling Facility north of Mesa was destroyed in a fire, Republic Services last week publicly unveiled a larger and more sophisticated replacement at its Beeline Highway location in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community.
Salt River Recycling Center Open for Business

The long-awaited 51,000-square-foot Salt River Recycling Center facility located at the landfill on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is now open for business. Built and managed by Republic Services, the new center will be able to process eight truckloads an hour, or 40 tons of material, according to Sidiq Young, Republic Services general manager, North Phoenix Business Unit.

Phoenix-based Republic Services unveiled plans last summer for a relocated Phoenix corporate campus at the major CityNorth mixed-use development near Desert Ridge Marketplace. It has now signed a long-term lease and a joint development agreement for the site, documents show.

A first-of-its-kind polymer center is projected to process 100 million pounds of plastic this year. The plant opened in December and has been processing plastic bottles and jugs since then. “The plastic water bottles are ground cleaned and then bagged to use as plastic bottles once again,” said Jeremy Walters with Republic Services.
