Father and Son Keep North Las Vegas Trucks Running Strong

More than three decades ago, a stepfather’s advice led Merrill H. to Republic Services. Starting as a serviceman helping in the mechanic shop, he quickly discovered a knack for turning wrenches and a passion for the trade.

Over the years, he advanced to maintenance manager in Nevada, helping keep Republic’s fleet running safely and reliably. Along the way, he found a passion for mentoring others and training the next generation of technicians to build successful careers.

“This trade is more important than ever. When I joined the industry, I focused on learning as much as I could. It’s been an honest career that has supported my family for years,” said Merrill. “The best part is that every day brings something different, and I’ve been able to mentor new technicians and help guide them down their own paths. It’s exciting.”

A Legacy Passed Down

Today, Merrill’s son, Quinn, is building his own career as a technician at Republic Services’ North Las Vegas operation, helping inspect, maintain and repair the trucks that serve our customers every day.

“Growing up, I saw how hard my dad worked and I learned my way around an engine from him,” said Quinn. “He showed me the value of dedication and it’s something I’ve tried to carry into my own career. It’s a mindset.”

Looking Ahead

As Merrill prepares to retire in a couple of years, Quinn is focused on continuing to learn, grow and build on the example his father set.

“My dad gave me the confidence to know I can go far,” shared Quinn.
