Expecting the Unexpected: Driver Recognition in North Boston

Priority #1: The safety of our colleagues and communities is our top priority at Republic Services. Residential Driver Dave S. is being recognized by General Manager Brian S. for the many, many ways safety drives every decision he makes. Here are three recent examples of Dave’s focus on being alert and expecting the unexpected – and being ready for it!

While working in Malden, MA, Dave approached a school zone. Being the professional driver that he is, he became super aware of his surroundings and noticed a man lying face down in the street. Dave approached the man to see if he needed assistance, when coming up on the man he realized he was having a seizure and needed immediate medical attention and he quickly called 911. Dave, a U.S. Marine Corp veteran, then aided the man until first responders arrived.

Remarkably, on the same day, he was taking his morning break when he noticed smoke coming from the back of a local business. Dave went to see where the smoke was coming from and to his surprise, flames were coming from the other side of the business fence. He called the local fire department and reported where he saw flames. While waiting for the fire department to arrive the winds picked up causing the fence and several landscape trees to quickly ignite. It was shortly after this that the fire department arrived, and Dave directed them to the fire before causing additional damage to the property.

Not only does Dave exemplify our value of Safe, he is also Committed to Serve and goes out of his way to help others in his community. Earlier this month, while Dave was stopped for lunch he noticed a distressed woman in the parking lot. Dave asked if she needed help and she informed him that she accidentally locked her 2 kids in the car with the car running, one was an infant the other was her 2-year-old but not capable of opening the doors.  Being familiar with the city’s businesses, Dave rushed to a nearby mechanic garage and asked to borrow a break-in kit and he was then able to open the SUV doors.

Thank you, Dave, for your quick actions in these three separate situations, two on the same day!  You are a true pillar in the communities you serve.
