Everyday Ethics: Timekeeping (Test Your Knowledge; Win Prizes!)

You may think that timekeeping is straight forward; employees clock in for their shift, clock out for lunch, then back in when lunch is over and out again at the end of the day. But what happens when they forget to clock out when they leave? Or, when they notice their timecard is missing the overtime hours they worked?

Accurate timekeeping is essential to ensure employees are paid properly, but it’s also required by state and federal law.

To ensure compliance with these laws as well as our policies and procedures, all non-exempt employees must:

  • Accurately record their time worked through the designated timekeeping system.
  • Request and receive approval from their supervisor prior to working any non-scheduled or overtime hours.

Leaders have additional responsibilities to ensure their teams are following these expectations and must:

  • Thoroughly review and approve non-exempt employees reported work time.
  • Promptly respond to all employees pay inquiries.
  • Ensure no work is being conducted, “Off-the-Clock” or that any time reported is altered by another employee.

Failure to follow any of the above expectations could lead to serious consequences, so it’s important to ensure all employees and leaders are following our timekeeping policies and procedures.

If you have any questions regarding timekeeping, reach out to your leader or your HR Partner.
