Everyday Ethics: Side Hustles

Did you know that having a side business, second job, or “moonlighting” as it’s often called, may be acceptable while working for the Company? As long as you take the following precautions and follow our Company policy, you may be able to try out other “side hustle” opportunities:

  • The other employer is not a competitor, customer, supplier or vendor of the Company;
  • You continue to meet the performance standards of your job and the Company’s scheduling requirements;
  • You do not perform work for other companies, individuals, or your own personal business during working time;
  • You do not use Company-provided property or technology to perform work for your second job; and
  • You comply with DOT Hours of Service regulations or other applicable laws regarding maximum allowable working hours.

If you are covered under the DOT’s Hours of Service Regulations as part of your employment with Republic Services and hold an outside job(s), you must report all hours worked to the Company.

If these precautions aren’t taken, a side job could create a conflict of interest – meaning your side job interferes or appears to interfere with the Company’s interest. If you believe you have real or perceived conflicts of interest, you must report it immediately to the Ethics & Compliance team so we can help you assess and lessen the potential for risk.
