Everyday Ethics: Salvaging at Our Facilities

Have you ever spotted something interesting in the trash or recycling and thought about taking it? This is called “scavenging” or “salvaging,” and it’s not allowed at our facilities.

Scavenging or “salvaging” means taking items from trash, recycling bins, or disposal areas, like our landfills and transfer stations, that don’t belong to you.

Scavenging or salvaging isn’t allowed because it is unsafe and once items are placed in our disposal areas, they become company property.  This policy applies to everyone including our employees, customers, and members of the general public.

Here are some tips to help keep you and others safe:

  • Speak up if you see or suspect of unsafe activities, such as scavenging, that are not permitted within our policies.
  • Call your manager or any other leader if you need help to address any concerns regarding safety or our policies.

If you need help making the right choice, review our Code of Business Ethics and Conduct. You can also reach out to your leader, another manager, HR, the Legal department, or email EthicsandCompliance@republicservices.com.
