Thank you to everyone who sent us their goals for becoming a better recycler (or just more eco-friendly) in the New Year. We received so many great resolutions from employees – everything from using refillable water bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles to using reusable bags on shopping trips.
View the slideshow for a look at employees’ recycling resolutions. (At the end of the year, we’re going to check back with these employees to see how they did in achieving their goals!)

[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Ryann C., HR Manager, Charlotte, NC' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-dj4r6i2'] “My recycling resolution is to pay closer attention to what I’m throwing into the recycle bin. I often just assume that something looks recyclable and toss it in. As I learn more about recycling, I’m going to make a point to ensure I’m putting the right things in the bin and not adding to recycling contamination.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Karrah S., Environmental Specialist, Houston, TX' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-d58zxbe'] “Since I work at a facility that is connected to a Recycling Center, I’d like to take one of the MANY boxes I get from Amazon orders, etc. and make it a dedicated recycling box. Then, once a month or so, bring the box with me to work and recycle all the things that we would normally throw out.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Anthony T., Senior Analyst, Hauling Operations, Phoenix, AZ' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-cq8imcq'] “Some of the actions that I’m going to take to reduce my environmental impact this year start with being a more informed, environmentally conscious consumer. Purchasing more sustainable products made from materials that are biodegradable, avoiding the use of single-use plastics (eating utensils, plastic cups, etc.) when possible, and ensuring that the correct materials are being put in the recycling containers to avoid contamination are ways that I will contribute.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Sandi W., Special Waste Executive, Lowellville, Ohio' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-c7eqrai'] “I live in an area with limited recycling options and no curbside pickup. I finally located a local recycling drop-off facility that accepts my abundant clean, flattened cardboard boxes. My goal this year is to find an option for glass bottles that are no longer accepted locally.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Shanice J. Southeast Area Revenue Management Analyst, Marietta, GA ' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-bkaphe2'] “This year I learned a lot that will help me become a better recycler. Now that I know the 3 basics, I can take this knowledge and educate my family and friends. My husband and I love to have cookouts at our house, so I will seize this opportunity to demonstrate how to recycle properly. Demonstrating proper recycling skills will be key to helping our family and friends become recycling superstars and lead to reducing our environmental impact.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Bernie W., Gate Attendant/Scale Operator, Great Falls, MT' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-b8xsz4a'] “Being as plastic bags are one of the largest contaminants, we see at our recycling facilities, I will start using reusable bags at the grocery store when possible.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Kimberly K., Plant Administrator, Farmingdale, NJ' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-amdrv56'] “To be a recycling superstar this year, I have put a separate can in my home for paper. I bring the paper here to work (MRF), shred it, and then put it in our shred pile which is then baled. I’ve also shared the Recycling Simplified Education curriculum with my sister and brother-in-law to use in their classes/schools. My sister is a special education teacher, and my brother in law is a vice principal. They love it!”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Alyssa J., Analyst, Engineering Operations Support, Phoenix, AZ' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-a79hdwq'] “This year, my recycling goal is to stop buying items from the grocery store that come in non-recyclable/non-compostable containers. (Extra bonus: I’ll stop buying and eating a lot of ‘junk’ foods!) And to further reduce my environmental impact, I’ve put several mason jars and reusable Tupperware containers into my reusable shopping bag stash in my car so that I can start utilizing the bulk foods aisle. I even stashed a reusable coffee cup in my car for those mid-day caffeine runs.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Debra S., Maintenance Clerk, Griffin, GA' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-a379bqi'] “I resolve to reduce my environmental impact by using as few single-use plastic bottles as possible – I’ll use a personal water bottle instead. I’ve probably used hundreds this month alone. If I can manage to use a reusable cup, I will eliminate a large amount of waste.”
[/av_content_slide] [av_content_slide title='Debbie A., Operations, Melrose Park, IL' link='' linktarget='' av_uid='av-wcogmi'] “Buy rechargeable batteries and recycle non-rechargeable batteries. When batteries begin to rot away in landfill sites these chemicals may leak into the ground, which can cause soil and water pollution. When chemicals contaminate soil and water, animals, humans and the environment can be harmed. Recycling is a great way to help protect the environment.”
