Employee Erik K. on a Movember Mission to Make a Difference for Men’s Health[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='16' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] We work for Earth. It’s something we take great pride in, and also one of the reasons we strive to hire the best people - like Erik K.
Erik is a graduate of Michigan State University, and his Environmental Science degree has served him well at Republic. He started his career here in May 1995 as a customer satisfaction representative in Detroit, MI. He has since held a variety of positions from special waste technical approvals and sales support to general manager trainee – all of which have led him to his current position in revenue management at our headquarters in Phoenix.

His father died at the age of 46, and like most men of his generation, if there wasn’t a missing appendage, then there was no reason to see a doctor. After his father got very sick, Erik told himself he would do a better job of managing his health through regular doctor visits. That was a life-changing decision for him.
“My career at Republic has been filled with learning and opportunity. I’m very proud to be part of an organization that is responsible to the environment, its employees and the communities we serve.”
At 40, Erik saw his doctor for a routine physical and underwent a series of tests which included monitoring his Prostate Specific Antigens (PSAs). The tests revealed that Erik’s PSA was slightly elevated, and, each time it was checked, it increased. At just 44, Erik’s PSA score crossed a threshold, and he was referred to a specialist who ultimately diagnosed him with prostate cancer.
Very close to the time Erik was diagnosed, his sister, mother and maternal aunt were fighting their own battle with breast cancer. Erik also learned that cancer was prevalent on his father’s side of the family.
A bunch of tests, scans, consultations, research, soul-searching later, Erik and his wife, Suzi, decided on a treatment plan. As fate would have it, his relocation to the Republic headquarters moved him within three miles from Mayo Clinic, where he was able to get world-class care and is currently in remission. This past spring, Erik marked his fourth ‘cancerversary.’
To celebrate, he has committed to running the NYC Marathon this fall in support of The Movember Foundation. Movember addresses some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. As part of ‘Team Movember,’ he and his wife are helping raise awareness as well as funds. Erik’s story is just one example of the many amazing employees we have working for Earth.
