On July 18, our Emergency Response Team was called to Clallam County, Washington, after a tanker truck carrying fuel overturned into Indian Creek. The tanker and trailer involved were carrying an estimated 3,900 gallons of diesel and up to 6,000 gallons of gasoline.
Our Response Team acted quickly to safely recover the fuel from the overturned vehicles, collecting around 7,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel. Indian Creek is a critical salmon and endangered lamprey habitat and the team was able to clear all areas, just in time for the annual salmon spawning season.
Project Highlights
- 30 Republic responders engaged in the cleanup effort
- 1.5 miles of Indian Creek cleaned and restored
- 50 tons of petroleum-impacted soil excavated and removed
- Key operations included agitating the creek bed, excavating contaminated soil and flushing shorelines
The team’s professionalism and dedication did not go unnoticed. Emergency Response Manager Jason P. and the Emergency Response team received some well-deserved praise from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
