Earth Day Tips: Leaders Share What They Do To Protect the Earth

While we all try to live our value of being Environmentally Responsible daily, it’s also nice to use Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, as an opportunity to find even more ways to improve our environment. We asked a few of Republic’s sustainability leaders to share their tips for incorporating meaningful ways to help the planet on Earth Day and every day at home and at work.

Chris S., Director Organics Operations

“I have three girls, and we are always growing plants, recycling and donating everything we can.”

Kristin S., Director Sustainability Solutions

“At home, every day I put my food scraps in a small pail in the freezer (to avoid odors) which then goes into my green bin. This prevents organics from going into the landfill. Organic material has the highest landfill emissions factor, so recycling is highly impactful.”

Zach H., Operations Manager ES, Anchorage, AK

“Sustainable practices that I enjoy doing at work are using a refillable water bottle, walking between facilities, and sharing rides whenever possible. At home, we transitioned all our lighting to LED. This change has led to noticeable savings on our energy bills and reduced our energy waste. Additionally, we are committed to water conservation. A memorable moment occurred when my daughter, inspired by a lesson at school about the importance of conserving water, reminded me to turn off the tap while I was washing dishes. Her insight opened my eyes to the significance of our water usage, and since then, we have made a conscious effort to minimize water waste in our household.”

Jaclyn F., Director Sustainable Innovation

“Recycle! Reuse plastic bags.”
