A young boy named Logan is sad to say good-bye to his favorite driver, Dwight. They’ve developed a tight bond over the past two years and according to Logan’s mom, Logan fully thinks of Dwight as one of his best friends. As Logan’s family is getting ready to move from their Chicago neighborhood, his mom took the time to write a note to Republic Services to let us know how amazing Dwight is and how much he will be missed by her son. Here’s an excerpt of her letter:
“In the beginning, Logan simply loved watching the truck from the window, but it wasn’t long before he was pointing to go outside. I would hold him, and we would quietly watch as Dwight emptied the dumpsters into the truck. Dwight always talked to Logan (even though Logan was too shy to talk at first). As he got more familiar with Dwight, he started engaging with him more and more.
Flash forward over 2 years later, and Logan fully thinks of Dwight as one of his best friends! Logan has also started racing Dwight’s truck down the sidewalk (you’ll be shocked to know Logan always wins), which is an entertaining time for all. Logan absolutely loves him, and he now has a little sister who gets very excited about Dwight’s visits as well!
Dwight has been such a consistent and positive presence in our lives. We were particularly grateful for him those first few months of lockdown. Often, he was the only other human we would have contact with during the week, and he brought fun, positivity, and consistency during a very difficult/uncertain time. Just recently, we learned that the neighbors in the condo across the street have been regularly watching Dwight and Logan interact and race, too. They said it brought them such joy during quarantine, and they look forward to it every week!
We are getting ready to move, and I can say without a doubt, one of the saddest parts of moving will be that our times with Dwight will come to an end. I could not leave without passing along what an amazing worker and human being you have under your employment.”
Dwight is very deserving our Republic Rockstar of the Week. We don’t think Logan is going to forget about his best friend Dwight any time soon!
We had a few questions to get to know Dwight a little better – check out his responses below.
Q How long have you worked at Republic?
A 3.5 years.
Q What do you like most about your job?
A The partnership I have with my supervisor.
Q Why do you think kids love garbage trucks so much?
A Because the truck is big and loud.
Q If you weren’t a Driver, what would be your dream job?
A I’ve always loved trucks, but I would’ve loved to be a mentor to young people.
Q What do you like to do in your free time?
A Spend time with my sons.
Q Do you have any tips for keeping kids safe around our trucks?
A Use the safety tips we learn from Republic and always be aware of your surroundings. Count the kids, think like a kid and simply stop if something seems off.
