Driven to Learn: Michael’s Journey from Apprentice to Fleet Maintenance Supervisor

When Michael W. joined Republic Services Technical Institute as a Technician Apprentice in September 2021, he was looking for an opportunity to further his education. Less than five years later, he has grown into a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor role, helping develop the next generation of technicians.

As a Technician Apprentice, Michael was paired with a senior technician, moving from observing and assisting to performing repairs independently. “It was very rewarding very fast, as I was able to rapidly increase my skillset and knowledge being with a senior tech,” Michael said.

Beyond the technical training, one of the most valuable lessons learned during the apprenticeship was the importance of teamwork. Building strong relationships with coworkers and understanding the value of pulling your weight made the entire team more successful.

After completing the apprenticeship program, Michael was promoted to C Tech, and just a couple of months later advanced to a B Tech role. With each step forward, Michael’s responsibilities expanded. He began helping teammates learn new techniques and eventually became a mentor to a Technician Apprentice, passing along the same guidance he had once received.

A key factor behind this progression has been an eagerness to learn. Michael continually seeks opportunities to expand his knowledge. “I consistently try to take on more work, so that I can improve my skillset as well as contribute as much as I can to my team,” Michael says.

Today, as a Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Michael says the most rewarding part of the role is the opportunity to help others grow. Having benefited from strong mentorship early in his career, he now takes pride in supporting the next generation of technicians and helping them succeed.

Michael’s success reflects not only personal determination and a passion for learning, but also the impact of Republic Services’ investment in people and creating pathways for career growth.
