We are continuing the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, and for this week’s feature, we are highlighting poet, short-story writer and author of The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros and the first Chicano poet laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera. Sandra Cisneros is an incredible writer whose work has earned her numerous awards including Chicago’s Fifth Star Award, The PEN Center USA Literary Award and the National Medal of the arts award presented to her by President Obama in 2016. Her most notable work, The House on Mango Street, has sold over six million copies, has been translated into over 20 languages and is a required reading in elementary, high school and universities across the nation.
The son of migrant farm workers, Juan Felipe Herrera was educated at UCLA and Stanford University. He has published more than a dozen collections of poetry, short stories, young adult novels and children’s literature. His most recent works for young people include Imagine (2018) and Jabberwalking (2018). In 2015 he was named U.S. poet laureate. Herrera has also been awarded two Latino Hall of Fame Poetry Awards, the Focal Award and a PEN West Poetry Awards.
