Celebrate Safely: 4th of July Summer Safety Tips

As we get ready to enjoy the 4th of July with fireworks, food and fun in the sun, don’t forget to keep safety top of mind. Here are a few quick tips to help you and your loved ones celebrate safely:

Firework Safety

  • Leave fireworks to the pros whenever possible.
  • If using legal fireworks at home, follow instructions, light one at a time and keep water nearby.
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks—even sparklers burn at 1,200°F!

Pool Safety

  • Always supervise kids in or near the water.
  • Avoid horseplay and running near wet surfaces.
  • Make sure everyone knows how to swim—and keep life jackets handy for weaker swimmers.

Hydration & Heat Safety

  • Drink water regularly, especially if you’re outside. Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol.
  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, excessive sweating and nausea.

Grilling & Food Safety

  • Keep the grill at least 10 feet away from your home and never leave it unattended.
  • Use a meat thermometer to make sure food is cooked safely.
  • Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot to avoid foodborne illness.

Wherever you’re headed for Independence Day, have fun—but stay alert, stay cool, and stay safe!
