Buh-bye, Birdies!

[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='18' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] Scavenger gulls come in masses and disrupt our daily landfill operations in a big way. They leave droppings that seep into the leachate (the liquid that forms from waste breaking down), disrupt landfill bulldozing, roost on nearby buildings and help themselves to the water supplies of neighboring communities. The use of reflective tape, scarecrows and flares doesn’t keep them away. However, nature arrived with a solution - falcons. Nothing says, “Get outta here!” to a seagull better than their natural predator.

Why We Do It?
Falconry is bird-based abatement and has been around for many years. It’s commonly used to clear airport runways, deter animals from crops – and at Republic, to protect our landfills. The falcons are specially trained to intimidate and chase – not to kill. Their presence alone is enough to stop the seagulls from coming to our landfills.

For falconry to work, it’s important they appear at random times because, if they show up every morning, the seagulls will just come in the afternoon. So, each facility works with a falcon handler (yep, it’s a legit job) to determine when the falcon will be brought to the landfill.

Falconry is just another way we are working to be more planet-friendly in our operations. And, while we don’t use falconry at all our landfills due to availability, need, etc., it’s a very useful tactic in scaring away unwanted critters that threaten the safety and sanitation of our landfills.

Health Hazards of Birds

[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='18' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] Gulls and other nuisance birds such as pigeons have been known to carry fungi, E.coli and even salmonella. Being a strategic, non-evasive tactic, falconry abatement is the ultimate eco-friendly solution to keep our landfills (and transfer stations, too) as clean and safe as possible.
