Roosevelt Landfill Operations Manager Zach F. was on his way home from work when he recognized that a BNSF train had a rail car that appeared unstable as it was significantly swaying back and forth on the verge of causing a train derailment. Through his relationship with BNSF staff as contractors for Republic Services, he called and informed them of the issue and they were able to reach the engineer to stop the train immediately. Zach’s quick action averted a potential disaster with a train derailment along the Columbia River. “Zach’s behavior demonstrates the type of leader he is on and off duty by keeping safety a top priority and following the philosophy of, if you see something, say something,” said Jeff B., General Manager Washington Post Collection.
As a result of Zach’s actions, BNSF leaders honored him with an On Guard Award and safety coin for exceptional vigilance and reporting.
