Stay Safe and Hydrated This Summer

Every system in your body depends on water — so it’s no surprise that dehydration can have a significant impact on our physical and mental performance and overall health. Even mild dehydration may reduce our energy levels and cognitive function and have a negative impact on our mood.

How much water we need varies depending on a number of factors, from age and body size to whether you work in the hot sun, or if you live in a dry or humid climate. The easiest way to know if you are getting enough water is to ask yourself – are you thirsty? If you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.

Here are some tips for staying hydrated throughout the summer and all year long:

  • Consider keeping a reusable water bottle with you and drink from it throughout the day.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after physical activity
  • Drink a glass of water when you wake in the morning and before each meal.
  • Food also helps you hydrate. Enjoy water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, celery, lettuce, tomatoes and strawberries.
