Men’s Health Month: Stay Healthy & Safe

June is Men’s Health Month – bringing awareness to the health issues all men face. Here are some tips and resources to help keep you healthy and fit.

  • More than 1/3 of men over the age of 20 are obese. Keep to a regular exercise routine (try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days of the week). Add strength exercises on two or more days a week.*
  • Less than 15% of men report wearing sunscreen when outside for more than an hour. Reduce your risk for skin cancer by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, staying in the shade during peak hours of the day and avoiding indoor tanning.
  • Studies show that women go to the doctor twice as much as men. Talk to your doctor about health screenings include blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, colon cancer and prostate cancer. Early detection can mean more effective treatment.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death in males. Maintaining a healthy weight and diet, getting regular exercise, limiting alcohol intake and avoiding tobacco use can all help prevent or lower your risk for heart disease.
  • Don’t forget about your mental health. Talk with your doctor about ways to manage and cope with stress in a healthy and productive way.
