Back It UP

[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='18' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] Whether your work day includes hours behind the wheel of a truck or you just drive to and from the office, we all have to know how to reverse our vehicles. There’s no getting around it – backing is a big part of driving. In fact, we do it so often that we probably don’t think too much about it.

But we should. Each year, 300 people are killed and another 18,000 are injured by drivers who are backing up. It’s such a serious problem that it’s one of our top six incidents as a Company and a critical topic covered in our Focus 6 program.

Want to get it right? Check out these quick tips to ensure you’re backing the safest way.

  • Shift your vehicle into reverse and wait a sec with your foot on the brake – When your white reverse lights pop on, you alert others that you plan to reverse. Give them a chance to see your lights and react.
  • Do a 360 degree check – Check around your vehicle in a full circle so you can spot any approaching hazards – pedestrians, animals, other vehicles. This allows you to be aware of everything that is going on around your vehicle the moment before you reverse.
  • Position your body - Turn your body so you can see out the rear window and keep your hands on the steering wheel.
  • Slowly release the brake pedal - Lift your foot off the brake pedal, allowing your vehicle to slowly reverse.
  • Continue to look – As you reverse, continue looking for people, animals and other vehicles.

Technology in cars is getting better all the time. Feel free to check your back-up cam and listen for the warning “you’re too close” beeps, but nothing replaces seeing things for yourself. Use these tools in addition to looking, not instead of.

  • Shift out of reverse – Put your car into park or drive as soon as you’re done backing. You might bruise more than just your ego if you forget and accidentally back into someone or something.

To help employees know where to stop, the exercise requires placing a fixed object at the end. General Manager John S. of our Nashville Division helped employees have a little extra fun by placing a cutout of himself in a hotdog suit as the object at the end of the course. It’s all about engagement, John. Good work!
