Love Your Heart

January 27, 2020

This February, as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, Black History Month and Maintenance Awareness Month, don’t forget to show your heart some love! February is American Heart Month, the perfect time to learn more about how you can take care of your heart.

Only 54% of adults in the US with high blood pressure have it under control. Since it often has no signs or symptoms, it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly.

High blood pressure may increase your risk of heart disease or stroke, but you can make lifestyle changes to help keep your blood pressure under control.

  • Reach and maintain a healthy weight.

  • Be physically active.

  • Eat a nutrient-rich diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy.

  • Decrease your sodium intake.

  • Take medications as prescribed.

  • Manage your stress through techniques such as yoga, tai chi or meditation.

These steps can help get you on track, but be sure to work with your doctor if you have concerns about your heart or blood pressure.
