The start of a new year is a great time to reset routines — whether that’s getting organized, building healthier habits or finding small ways to make a positive impact every day.
One resolution that’s easy to keep and makes a real difference? Recycling smarter.
Here are a few simple reminders to help you recycle smarter in the year ahead:
Know What to Throw
Stick to the basics when recycling:
- Cardboard and paper
- Metal cans
- Plastic bottles and jugs
Items like plastic bags, food-soiled paper, electronics, batteries and clothing do not belong in the recycling cart and should be disposed of properly.
Empty. Clean. Dry.
Food and liquid residue are major sources of contamination. Even one dirty container can impact an entire load. Before recycling, make sure items are empty, clean and dry.
Keep Recyclables Loose
Bagging recyclables may seem tidy, but it creates challenges at the sorting facility. Always place recyclables loose in the cart unless your local program says otherwise. Plastic bags should never go in the recycling cart.
Skip the “Wishcycling”
It’s tempting to toss questionable items in the recycling cart and hope for the best. While well intentioned, wishcycling can slow sorting, damage equipment and contaminate good recyclables.
Small Habits, Big Impact
Recycling smarter is about building better habits over time. Every clean container, loose item and correct choice helps protect the system and the people who keep it running.
As we head into the new year, let’s keep doing what we do best by taking care of our communities, our customers and each other starting at home.
