Republic Team –[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='18' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] It is with great sadness that I share with you the news that Wayne Huizenga, a key leader in our Company’s history, passed away. He was 80 years old and is survived by his children and grandchildren.
Wayne was not your ordinary guy; he was a visionary, a businessman, a leader and importantly, the founder of Republic Services.
In 1962 at age 25, Wayne’s father loaned him $5,000 to start his own garbage business with one truck. In five years, he grew it to be one of the biggest fleets in the nation. After several years and business ventures, including sports team franchises and Blockbuster Video, Wayne took on his next adventure. In 1995, Wayne invested $64 million to buy Republic Waste Industries. In 1998, Republic Services, Inc., completed an initial public offering, one of the biggest stepping stones in becoming the Company we are today. In fact, this July, Republic will celebrate 20 years on the New York Stock Exchange, a milestone attributed to Wayne’s leadership.
Without the vision and efforts of Wayne, Republic Services would not exist today. It’s also why our highest internal Company award is known as The Wayne Huizenga Lifetime Achievement Award.
In the words of Wayne, “The only way the job gets done is with good people. And I’ve always said a successful company will have great people behind it. Without a doubt, the talented team at Republic has created a great company with a rock-solid foundation, and I’m glad I was part of the team.”
Please keep the Huizenga family in your thoughts and prayers.
