Juneteenth – Celebrating Freedom Day

[/av_textblock] [av_textblock size='16' font_color='' color='' av-medium-font-size='' av-small-font-size='' av-mini-font-size='' admin_preview_bg=''] Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. Dating back to 1865, it was June 19 that Union soldiers landed at Galveston, TX with news that the war had ended and that all slaves were free. June 19, therefore, became the day of emancipation for thousands of Black U.S. citizens.

Ever since, African Americans have celebrated that date as “Juneteenth Independence Day.” Juneteenth is an official State Holiday in Texas.

Here at Republic Services, we celebrate diversity and spotlight multicultural holidays and religious holidays recognized in the U.S. to appreciate the diversity of traditions.
