101 Days of Summer Safety – Fourth of July Tips

As you gear up to celebrate the Fourth of July with family, great food and time in the sun, keep safety front and center. A few simple steps can help you and your loved ones enjoy the day worry-free:

Fireworks Safety

  • Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever you can.
  • If using legal fireworks at home, follow all instructions, light one at a time and keep water nearby.
  • Keep fireworks out of kids’ hands — sparklers can burn as hot as 1,200°F.

Pool Safety

  • Always keep eyes on kids in or near the water.
  • Skip running or rough play around wet surfaces.
  • Make sure swimmers are confident in the water and keep life jackets nearby.

Hydration & Heat Safety

  • Drink water often, especially outdoors; limit caffeine and alcohol.
  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors to cool down.
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like headaches, dizziness, heavy sweating and nausea.

Grilling & Food Safety

  • Set up grills at least 10 feet from your home and never leave them unattended.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure food is fully cooked.
  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold to prevent illness.

However you celebrate, enjoy the holiday — but stay aware, stay cool and stay safe.
