101 Days of Summer Safety: Be Ready for Summer Weather Hazards

Summer brings more than sunshine—it also brings extreme heat, severe storms, hurricanes, lightning and flash flooding. Taking a few simple precautions at home or while traveling can help keep you and your family safe all summer long.

Be ready for storms. Conditions can change quickly during the summer months. Follow these tips to stay safe.

  1. Check forecasts before heading out.
  2. Have a plan for severe weather.
  3. Never drive through flooded roadways.
  4. If you get caught in a dust storm and visibility drops, get completely off the road, turn off your lights and wait it out safely.

Travel Safely This Summer. Whether you’re traveling for work or vacation, a little preparation goes a long way. Summer weather, heavy traffic and unfamiliar roads can increase risks when you’re away from home.

  1. Check weather conditions and travel advisories before you leave.
  2. Allow extra travel time during storms, road construction and peak travel periods.
  3. Keep an emergency kit with water, a phone charger and basic supplies in your vehicle.
  4. Never drive distracted or fatigued—take breaks on long trips and share driving responsibilities when possible.
  5. If severe weather develops, pull over to a safe location and wait until conditions improve.
